Making the most of the new rubbish and recycling scheme

This information sheet is designed to help ensure that those living on Oxford Waterside make the maximum contribution to the City’s efforts to increase the amount of waste that is recycled.  Our top tips are as follows:

Use the (green) battery recycling box on the wooden wall of Phil & Jim School to recycle depleted household batteries; it’s accessible 24 hours a day.

If you have items of furniture for disposal, try to sell them or give them away rather than take them to the Redbridge tip. You certainly cannot leave them out for the dustmen. Look out for local “swap shops”, give them to a charity shop, use the local web site for exchanging goods (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oxfordfreecycle), or advertise the items on the OWRA notice board.

Set up a compost bin in your back garden or buy one. You can get one for only £6 (with free delivery) from 0845 130 6090. You will then be able to dispose of vegetable waste (without putting it in your wheelie bin) and improve the quality of your garden soil at the same time.

While everyone is encouraged to recycle as much as possible, there are some things still that cannot be recycled. These include the Tetra-paks in which most fruit-juices are sold. Please don’t, therefore, put these in the blue box with your other cardboard.

You don’t have to put up with a large wheelie bin if you only need a small one. Call 01865 252900 or e-mail recycling@oxford.gov.uk if you want to change your wheelie bin.

Rinse out all bottles, jars and tins for recycling.

Scrunch up all plastic bottles so that you can fit more into the blue box.

If you find your blue box gets full very quickly – perhaps you use a lot of cans and plastic bottles - you can swap this for a blue wheelie bin. This will cost you £20 however.

Use washable rather than disposable nappies. For advice on this, call 0845 850 0606.

Ensure all food waste is double-wrapped before putting it into your wheelie bin. This will help prevent smells….as will storing the bin out of direct sunlight…..as will washing out the bin regularly.

A few Waterside people have already volunteered to provide advice on recycling.  These will be our “champions”.  Please let Stuart Skyte know if you would like to help (01865 559618 or skyte@ukgateway.net).
